The Challenge
Keeping our employees safe is an ongoing challenge for organizations in every industry. Even when we are able to provide top of the line personal protection equipment and well-designed processes, employees (and organizations) remain at risk.
One of the biggest problems is that some of our riskiest behaviors are those in which we engage habitually and unconsciously. What is needed is a process by which safe behaviors remain front of mind long enough to become safe habits - the process by which safety becomes...
INSTINCTIVE.
Our Unique Approach
As is the case with all interventions provided by the Galileo Initiative, our approach to safe work habits is grounded in the provable relationship between what people believe and how they behave. Unless a safety initiative influences employees at the level of belief, you get short term change at best. In order to affect sustainable improvement is safety practices, beliefs must be changed among two groups: the
Leadership
and the
Worksforce
Safety is a Leadership Issue
How is leadership in your organization influencing employee perspectives concerning safety? When, for example, we provide safety training and equipment, but repeatedly encourage or reward taking shortcuts, we undermine our efforts. When leaders at all levels walk the talk, change occurs more rapidly and sustainably. Galileo will work with you to accurately assess your management influences in the area of safety.
Safety is a Workforce Issue
What does your workforce actually believe about safe work habits? If they're like most workers, they might buy in to safe procedures on the surface, but actually believe ideas like "some percentage of accidents are just unavoidable" (Not true), or "it won't happen to me" (Not true), or "I'm not responsible for you" (Once again, not true).
When the beliefs that put "ugly stuff" in play are uncovered and challenged, we begin to make inroads. Habits, both productive and not, are created by repetition. Bringing the world of safety home to employees at all levels is a matter of establishing and practicing behaviors based on correct and productive beliefs about workplace safety.
